Karen Blixen Tented Camp

Set on the bank of the Mara River,  Karen Blixen Camp in the Masai Mara offers an authentic ’yesteryear’ experience for visitors wishing to gain that little extra from their safari. The location is spectacular, with the great Mara plains behind the camp and the impressive escarpment and Mara River in front. Throughout the day, zebras, elephants and hippos come to drink from the river. Long gone are the days when staying in a tented camp meant roughing it. You will find that the Karen Blixen Camp experience is a step back in time with the luxurious of today. Camp facilities also include a restaurant, bar, lounge, swimming pool, gift shop with internet access as well as wellness treatments offered by our resident masseuse.

Accommodation

Karen Blixen Camp consists of 22 luxurious tents. Set on large mahogany platforms – each with a private veranda from which you can enjoy an afternoon siesta drinking in the wonderful surroundings. The tents are furnished with comfortable furniture for the ultimate camping luxury. 19 tents are placed along the riverbank, whilst 3 units are situated on raised platforms offering incredible views of the area. Each of the tents has private bathrooms.
Eco Friendly
Gas geysers heats up water whenever a guest wishes to enjoy a hot shower. We do not use firewood and thus refrain from contributing to deforestation of the area. 6 solar panels provide us with all the necessary electricity with a battery bank making sure there is power and light in the tents all day and night.  Conservation, Community & Compact – With the utmost respect for the Mara ecosystem, Karen Blixen Camp has been constructed and is run in the most environmentally conscious manner.
The sewing system treats waste water ensuring zero impact of the nearby Mara River, and a strict waste management plan ensures that all organic waste is composted and all non-organic is recycled. All measures are taken to protect the beautiful ecosystem and biodiversity of Masai Mara.

Karen Blixen Camp supports the local Masai community through various initiatives and is currently responsible for providing better health care facilities to the nearby village. The camp is also leasing more than 700 hectares of land for conservation purposes and has begun the plantation of more than 20,000 trees.

LOCATION IN MARA

The camp is situated in southern Kenya on the northwestern border of the famed Masai Mara Reserve in Koiyaki 20 minutes drive north of Musiara Gate on 66 acres concession of private land leased from a Masai landlord.
Accessibility
Karen Blixen camp is accessible by flight from Nairobi, Mombasa, Samburu, Lewa Downs and Nanyuki or by private charter flights the drive from Kichwa Tembo and Musiara Airstrip is approximately 45 minutes. The camp is also accessible by road. The drive from Nairobi takes approximately 5 hours during the dry season, and 7 hours in the green season.
