The Great Rift Valley
Country(s): Kenya |
Kenya is privileged to have a number of natural wonders the Rift Valley being one of them. The panoramas view of this great phenomenon, the can be witnessed as far as from the moon. Many million years ago, the earth's crust weakened and tore itself apart creating a jagged extending for over 5,000 km. The feature runs north to south from northern Syria to Mozambique. The valley varies in width from 30-100 km.The land on either side erupted creating great volcanic mountains, while the valley floor gradually sank into a low flat plain. This geologic phenomenon was named in honor of a Scottish explorer John Walter Gregory, who was the first European to see and research about it but later changed the names. It divides Kenya neatly down the length of the country essentially separating east from west. Uninhabitable desert and fertile farmland, flat arid plains and steep escarpments characterize today’s Rift Valley. The Rift habours a number of attractions one being the Hells Gate National Park. Gazetted in 1984 because of the Olkaria Geothermal Project, Hells Gate is one of the parks in Kenya where you can witness hot springs and the magical gorges. At Hells Hate one can be able to hike up the Njorowa gorge, the fischers tower, the central tower or just next to the Ol Karia Geothermal turbines. Other attractions includes, L. Naivasha, L.
